Grade: High Exposure to Destructive Companies

AIG, or American International Group, is a global insurance and financial services giant headquartered in New York, operating in more than 80 countries and employing over 25,000 people. The company offers a broad range of products, including general insurance, life and retirement solutions, and specialised financial services, serving both individuals and major corporations.

AIG’s reputation remains overshadowed by its central role in the 2008 financial crisis, when it required a $180 billion bailout from the US government after its pursuit of profits at all costs contributed to global economic turmoil.

CASE STUDY: Freeport LNG Terminal

  • Insured by AIG

The Freeport Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal in Texas became a focal point of controversy following a major explosion in June 2022. This incident severely disrupted its operations, highlighting the inherent risks associated with such large-scale fossil fuel infrastructure. Local residents and environmentalists have long warned of such dangers. Despite these warnings and the plant’s safety violations, Freeport LNG was fined only $1.5 million and resumed operations after repairs.

The aftermath saw AIG reportedly reject claims related to the blast.

Insurers aren’t going to make changes to how they cover fossil fuels, and especially LNG, on their own. Pressuring the industry to make the changes is vital to slowing climate change.

BP, one of the world’s largest energy corporations, is a symbol of ruthless greed and imperial exploitation. Born as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1909, it was the engine of British imperialism, securing control over Iranian oil through corruption and coercion while the Iranian people were left impoverished and dispossessed.

BP’s legacy is stained with environmental catastrophe and human suffering. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster unleashed nearly five million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, killing untold marine life and devastating ecosystems, all while BP cynically promoted its “Beyond Petroleum” greenwashing campaign.

Now, BP is complicit in genocide, supplying oil that fuels Israel’s brutal war machine against Palestinians. Weeks into the genocide, BP accepted an Israeli gas exploration license, proving yet again its callous disregard for oppressed communities.

Dana Petroleum, headquartered in Scotland, is a significant player in the North Sea oil and gas sector, holding interests in 22 fields and maintaining a robust presence through ongoing contracts and partnerships.

Dana’s expansion into the Israeli energy market has drawn severe criticism and allegations of complicity in war crimes. In late 2023, just weeks after Israel’s assault on Gaza escalated, Dana joined a consortium awarded a lucrative offshore gas exploration licence west of the Leviathan field—territory widely recognised under international law as part of Palestine’s maritime boundary. Revenues from these licences directly bolster the Israeli state, funding genocidal military operations against Palestinians. Palestinian NGOs are now threatening legal action against Dana and its partners, accusing them of profiting from the pillaging of occupied land and contributing to the machinery of oppression and violence in Gaza.

Maersk, the world’s largest shipping and logistics company, is deeply complicit in sustaining Israel’s genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people in Gaza. Research by the Palestinian Youth Movement’s ‘Mask Off Maersk’ campaign revealed that, since October 2023, Maersk has shipped millions of pounds of military goods to Israel—over 2,000 shipments from the United States alone—including armoured vehicles, tactical trucks, aircraft components, and weapons systems destined for the Israeli Ministry of Defence. These shipments have directly supplied the machinery of mass slaughter, with Maersk’s cargo linked to F-35 fighter jets used in airstrikes that have obliterated entire neighbourhoods and killed thousands of civilians. Despite mounting evidence and international condemnation, Maersk’s vessels continued to dock at ports in Spain and Morocco, even as campaigners attempt to block these arms shipments in protest against the ongoing atrocities

Mears Group is one of the UK’s largest private contractors providing accommodation and support for asylum seekers, operating under ten-year, billion-pound government contracts across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. Asylum housing has become the company’s most profitable division, with 2024 profits soaring by 37%, driven by taxpayer-funded Home Office contracts. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Mears controversially moved thousands of asylum seekers from community flats into emergency hotels, citing public health reasons. In reality, this shift generated huge profits, as hotel accommodation costs the public up to seven times more than community housing, while residents endured overcrowding, squalor, and neglect. Reports documented dire conditions, malnutrition, and severe mental health crises, culminating in tragic deaths and widespread suffering. Even outside the pandemic, Mears has been repeatedly criticised for failing to address dangerous housing conditions, ignoring urgent repairs, and subjecting families to abrupt, traumatic relocations.

L3Harris Technologies is deeply embedded in the global arms trade and plays a pivotal role in equipping Israel’s military with advanced, highly destructive technology. As the world’s ninth largest weapons manufacturer, L3Harris produces over 1,600 components for the F-35 fighter jet—Israel’s primary weapon in its relentless bombardment of Gaza, responsible for widespread civilian casualties and devastation. The company’s systems are also integral to Israel’s Sa’ar-class warships, which enforce the illegal naval blockade, strangling Gaza’s access to essential goods and humanitarian aid. L3Harris is a key supplier of guidance kits and bomb components used in the precision-guided munitions that have levelled entire neighbourhoods and targeted civilian infrastructure in Gaza.

Beyond conventional arms, L3Harris contributes to the US and UK’s nuclear weapons programmes, supplying components for the Trident II ballistic missiles and participating in the Sentinel nuclear missile modernisation through Northrop Grumman.

Rolls-Royce, the UK’s second-largest arms manufacturer, is deeply entwined with both Britain’s nuclear weapons programme and Israel’s machinery of war in Gaza. Through its German subsidiary MTU, Rolls-Royce supplies the engines powering Israel’s Merkava 4 and 5 tanks, Namer armoured personnel carriers, and Eitan armoured fighting vehicles—hardware extensively deployed during the 2023 ground invasion of Gaza, including in attacks on medical facilities such as Shifa Hospital. These engines are the most significant Merkava component made outside Israel, forming the backbone of armoured assaults that have killed thousands and devastated civilian infrastructure. Rolls-Royce also provides propulsion systems for 80% of the Israeli Navy’s patrol boats, which enforce the illegal and deadly blockade of Gaza.

On the nuclear front, Rolls-Royce holds contracts to supply reactor cores for the UK’s Trident missile submarines, directly supporting Britain’s weapons of mass destruction.
