Methodology

The methodology used for the grading is weighted scoring system.

It assigns a weighted score to each insurer based on their fossil fuel underwriting premiums and the number of destructive companies insured. This score determines their grade.

Two data sets were used to create the grading. Both sets can be applied to all featured insurers, making a direct comparison possible.

The featured insurers are those that are providing any type of insurance to businesses in the UK. Therefore, information about their ethics is particularly relevant for institutions and companies that want to avoid supporting insurers that are contributing to the climate crisis, war, genocide and migrant detention.

First Data Set: Fossil Fuel Insurance Premiums (GDPW)

This dataset estimates the value of insurance premiums collected by insurers from fossil fuel companies in 2023. The figures, provided by market intelligence firm Insuramore, cover 33 UK property and casualty insurers and are based on Gross Direct Premiums Written (GDPW)—the total premiums an insurer earns before deductions like reinsurance.

The “Fossil Fuels GDPW” portion represents premiums paid by clients involved in fossil fuel activities, including:

  • Coal mining
  • Oil and gas extraction
  • Electricity generation from coal or gas

In simple terms, this metric reflects an insurer’s revenue (or “turnover”) from underwriting fossil fuel-related risks in 2023. The data provides midpoint estimates, offering a snapshot of each company’s exposure to the fossil fuel sector.

Second Data Set: Employers’ Liability Cover

A structured search was conducted to identify the insurers providing Employers’ Liability insurance in the UK to the companies that:

  • Are running detention centres and accommodation for migrants in the UK and are involved in surveillance of migrants
  • Have supplied—or whose equipment has been deployed for—Israel’s assault on Palestinians since October 7, 2023
  • Are involved in a class of weapons known as “controversial weapons” – specifically nuclear weapons, white phosphorus and depleted uranium. These companies have been linked to controversial weapons via production, handling, maintaining, assembling, dismantling, or stockpiling. When it comes to nuclear weapons – the companies are involved either directly in warheads or in delivery systems for those.

Employers’ Liability insurance is designed to cover businesses for claims made by employees who suffer work-related injuries or illnesses. Under UK regulations, insurers must make details of Employers’ Liability insurance policies available to their employees to ensure that individuals can locate relevant coverage in the event of a claim. If a company does not have Employers’ Liability insurance, it cannot legally operate.
